Superfood Sunday Spotlight: Matcha

All we have been hearing about lately is MATCHA!!! Matcha is a powdered green tea that will satisfy your caffeine cravings. In traditional green tea the leaves are discarded after they are soaked in hot water, when drinking matcha, the actual leaves along with all its nutrients are being consumed!

Nutrition Facts:

Matcha green tea contains over 10 times the nutrients when compared to traditional teas as well as when compared to popular fruits and vegetables. It is full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants! It includes iron, potassium, polyphenols and so much more!

  • Polyphenol in matcha boosts metabolism, prevents against aging, reduces blood pressure, regulates blood sugar, and prevents against diseases. What more could we ask for?
  • Just 1 teaspoon of matcha has almost the same amount of caffeine that a cup of coffee does. The caffeine in matcha is released slower than coffee, therefore you’ll avoid that common caffeine crash because the energy is distributed through your body over an extended period of time.
  • Reduces cortisol, the stress hormone that’s responsible for belly fat and increased appetite.
  • Burns fat
  • Boosts immune system

Suggested Uses:

  1. DIY matcha mask- Mix 1 teaspoon of matcha powder, 1 teaspoon of honey, and 1/2 tablespoon of coconut oil. Slather on your skin and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and enjoy that glow!
  2. Make popsicles- Blend 1 teaspoon matcha powder with 1 cup blueberries, 1/2 banana, mint leaves, and 1 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Pour in popsicle molds and freeze.
  3. Make a matcha latte- Mix 1 teaspoon of matcha powder with 2 oz hot water in a cup. Then, pour 6 oz. of steamed almond/coconut milk over the matcha mixture. Delicious!
  4. DIY easy banana matcha ice cream- Blend 2 frozen bananas, 1/4 cup almond milk, and 1 teaspoon of matcha powder. Scoop frozen mixture into a bowl and top with dark chocolate chips and almond butter drizzle.

Coco and Nuts for Coconut Oil

Your most versatile 12$ kitchen ingredient is not just a cooking staple, coconut oil has become the moment’s most fawned over natural beauty item. You can purchase it at any health food store (just be sure to to get raw, organic, virgin coconut oil). Personally I use it as my face and body moisturizer, hair mask, and as a makeup remover. It’s an amazing all-purpose product – I literally use it from head to toe! This post is focussed on how to use it to enhance your natural beauty and get you glowing! Hopefully after reading it you will be just as COCO for coconut oil as I am (pun intended).

  • Fights frizz – This is one of the most popular beauty uses of coconut oil. Thanks to its rich fatty acids and proteins, the natural oils repel water and prevent frizz. I use a penny size of it on my hair during those dreadful super humid days in the city!
  • Hair conditioning  – It works wonders for dry, damaged, overly-styled, or can’t-get-the-tangle-out hair. Rub some oil throughout your hair, leave it on in the shower for a few minutes, rinse it off, and WOILA gorgeous silky hair!
  • For your skin – Slather it on because coconut oil is full of vitamin E, which encourages the growth and repair of our skin cells, protecting against aging and cracking of the skin. In addition to moisturizing your skin, coconut oil is a natural antibacterial and anti fungal.

Products I recommend:

  • KOPARI – I love that Sephora carries a sample box of this line – I was able to try everything before committing to one product! My favorite item was the coconut body glow. It gave my skin a light shimmer glow that had me walking down the streets like it was a Milan runway.
  • Yes to coconut – This ultra light spray body lotion is my go to product (especially in the dry heat of summer). I love the hydration my skin has after just a few squirts of this lotion. Plus, the products in this line are well priced.
  • Shea Moisture – Coconut & hibiscus curl & shine shampoo and conditioner set is my favorite haircare product for myself and my son (he has super curly hair – almost afro like 🙂 The smell is so lovely and it makes my hair soft and silky, and allows me to brush out his knots easily without a tear spilled.
  • Shea Moisture – Coconut & hibiscus dead sea bath salts – I use this after a tough work out when my muscles need some TLC. This product not only soothes my muscles, but it softens and nourishes my skin as well.
  • Earthtuface – Coconut body butter – This total body butter will recharge nourish and hydrate your body. It contains organic virgin coconut oil, unrefined cocoa butter, cardamom, cinnamon and sunflower derived Vitamin E.
  • Coconut Oil – Good old coconut oil – I love to just use the oil to remove my makeup, a few squirts in my bath to moisturize my skin, and on my cuticles to strengthen them in-between manicures.

How do you incorporate coconut oil into your daily routine? Share your thoughts, comments, and go to uses for coconut oil and we will feature you on the blog!

Instructor spotlight : Amanda Kloots

What can’t she do!!?? Dance, jumprope, Instagram sensation, and trainer to the stars (the list goes on and on). Amanda is our version of a fitness BOSS! After insta-stalking her class, we decided to head downtown on the 1 train and do a back to back dance and rope class. We are not sure what was more sore post class, our cheeks from smiling for 2 full hours or our muscles from jumping, twisting, and turning! Amanda’s energy is infectious (we watched her give it her all even when it was her 8th workout of the day!!) and her sweet demeanor brings us back for more! You can check out Amanda’s classes offered at Studio B in Bandier Flatiron.

The Dance:

Let us start off by saying we could not qualify for “so you think you can dance”. The only time you will find us dancing is in our apartment with the shades shut, the door locked, and some Britney blasting! We usually gravitate toward a more bootcamp style class, and shy away from public dancing, but we couldn’t ignore all the hype this class was getting so we decided to check it out. With a packed class, Amanda creates a fun and manageable (for us non dancers) class where everyone channels their inner Beyonce. The class consists of constant jumping shaking and shimmying and a stretch to finish it off.

The Rope:

JUMP SKIP SMILE! Holy cow was this a tough workout. Who knew that the classic playground toy could give us such a killer burn! Amanda created this interval cardio style class which incorporates cardio and toning using just the jumprope. The class consists of jumping, planking, arms and abs  using the jumprope as resistance, and some lower body moves. The different rounds test your endurance, speed, and coordination. Throughout the class, Amanda focused on each individual’s form and corrected those that needed help. Our hearts were pounding from the cardio bursts and our arms shaking from the arm series. The music was loud and energizing and by the time we finished belting out the lyrics, class flew by and we were on to stretching (THANK GOD!!). What we love about this class is that it showed us that all you need is this one piece of equipment to get a full body workout – for our next vacation we are just packing a jumprope!

*We can’t wait for Amanda’s videos to come out so that we could jump it out anywhere and everywhere! Stay tuned…

Stop and try the ROSES

Roses are too good to be left sitting on your nightstand after Valentine’s Day. This iconic flower has many benefits for the skin, hair, and digestive system. In distilled forms, roses have been used in cosmetics, medicines, and therapeutic treatments for centuries. Rose water can reduce inflammation in the skin, alleviate anxiety, enhance your mood, soothe digestion, and purify the body thanks to the flavonoids, tannins, and other essential vitamins it contains.

Rose is a popular ingredient in skin care and with good reason! It is used in various products such as toner, facial oil, and body lotion. It is known for treating redness, acne, sunburns, and for hydrating dry skin. It contains a complex array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Rose oil has excellent emollient properties for moisturizing dry skin, antiseptic properties to treat acneic skin, and anti-inflammatory properties that helps treat redness and inflammation.

Products we love:

  • Rose Fresh Face Mask – This is one of our favorite hydrating and toning gel masks – it is infused with real rose petals which restore radiance and suppleness to all skin types.
  • Biossance Squalance + Vitamin C Rose Oil – Get this product while its still available because it has been selling out in Sephora faster then you can say ROSE OIL! This face oil will brighten and firm your skin (we are majorly obsessed with everything Biossance makes).
  • Kopari Coconut Rose Toner –  We recently added this to our daily skin-care routine and we’re not mad about it!! We been loving the effects it has been having on our skin – this is a must in our gym bag for post sweaty workouts.
  • Kopari Cleansing Oil – Kopari’s Coconut Rose Cleansing Oil will leave your face feeling clean, supple, and smooth without stripping the skin’s natural moisture or clogging pores.
  • Primally Pure Rose + Mint Complexion mist – A balancing and refreshing mist made with ingredients that hydrate, soothe, and tone the skin. We carry this product in our bag and use it to feel refreshed throughout the day.

But put down the spritz bottle because your favorite juice spots are now selling rose infused water. Just as rose water is commonly used to cleanse the skin as a topical skin toner, drinking rose water also purifies the body due to the flavonoids, tannins and other essential vitamins it contains (e.g. A, C, D, E and B3).

  • Juice press rose infused water is made by double-distilling rose blooms to extract the oils and their essence.
  • Drink h2 rose – H2rose is a specialty beverage uniquely made of rose water, saffron and other natural ingredients. The brand combines all-natural flavors to create berry, apple, peach, and mango-flavored rose water, in case you’re not a huge fan of the floral-y taste.
  • Sakara Beauty Water – Infused water that boasts 100 percent natural rose oil and beautifying trace minerals like Silica, which is known to help your body form healthy connective tissue.
